Private Yacht Charter to the Channel Islands: Here's What to Expect
Affectionately called the “Galapagos of North America”, the Channel Islands are truly unique landscape of the California coastline.
So don’t leave your experience up to chance by taking a public ferry or shared boat where schedules and other visitors can dictate your time. Consider why a private yacht is more than just a comfortable boat ride…but rather an entirely different memorable experience.
Start the Day When and Where You Want
Unlike scheduled public charters or ferries, there’s no boarding line, no overhead announcements, no countdown clock on your private yacht. Together, we coordinate when the day starts and what destination(s) are on the docket. On the day-of, the crew will walk you through the plan, but it’s more of a framework than a schedule.
A Chance for Wildlife Encounters
The Santa Barbara Channel has a personality of its own. Some days it’s glassy and calm; other days it reminds you that you’re very much on the open ocean. Either way, this stretch is far from empty. It’s common to encounter pods of dolphins riding the bow wake, and depending on the season, you may spot whales; gray whales during migration, or even humpbacks feeding in the channel.
The waters surrounding the islands are part of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, which means visibility is often excellent and marine life is abundant. Sea stars, garibaldi, rays—it’s all there if you take the time to look. On a private yacht, the crowd will never be in the way of your views and a strict schedule won’t stop a detour.
Allow for Flexibility to Set Your Own Pace
Your day exploring the Channel Islands will depend on weather and water conditions, as well as what islands you prefer to see. On a standard trip, your time is structured around arrival and departure windows. On a private charter, the day bends around you.
Want to spend an hour snorkeling in a kelp forest? You can.
Prefer to stay on board and take it all in from the deck? That works too.
Got to get in a kayak so you can get closer? Let’s get you in.
Spot a secluded cove that wasn’t on the plan? You can go.
Hopeful to make multiple stops? Plan for it accordingly.
Weather, wind, and swell play a role and plans may shift. Certain landings (especially on San Miguel Island) can be limited or require permits. The difference is that instead of canceling, we adapt. A good captain can read the conditions and guide the day toward the best possible version of itself. Whether that means changing islands, finding calmer water, or focusing more on offshore exploration.
Enjoy the coastal coves of the Channel Islands by asking your guide for Kayaks.
