Santa Barbara Private Sunset Cruise: The Perfect Way to Celebrate Life's Best Moments
Our private Santa Barbara sunset cruises are the perfect way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, engagement, or family reunion, making any special occasion more magical.
Picture you and some of your favorite people enjoying an evening on the water overlooking a sunset.
A private sunset cruise gives you a couple hours completely set apart from everyday life, out on open water, with nowhere to be and no one to answer to but your own group. No traffic, no restaurant noise, no waiting for a table. Just your group, your boat, your playlist, and the whole coastline sliding by.
That's what makes it work for almost any occasion:
Birthdays — imagine your group toasting as the sky turns orange over the water, cake in hand!
Romantic or Engagements — there's a reason so many proposals happen on the water here. The scenery makes for the perfect backdrop for unforgettable, romantic memories. Add on special packages like champagne or gourmet catering.
Anniversaries — a quiet re-do of the first date, with champagne, and none of the distractions of a crowded restaurant.
Family reunions and milestone birthdays — perfect for all ages, offering a safe and enjoyable environment for families to bond while soaking in the spectacular views.
Girls' or guys' nights, bachelorette parties, retirements — a reason to get dressed up and be somewhere memorable without needing a plan for what happens next.
Other private group trips - book for corporate events, touring with out-of-towner friends or explore where you live like a tourist.
The boat becomes the setting, but the evening is really about who's on it!
What the Evening Actually Looks Like
We meet at Stearns Wharf to board the boat from a luxury reception area. Captain Ron will go over the boat and its safety measures, answering any questions you might have. Once everyone is settled in the boat will pull away from the harbor just as the light hits the late-afternoon golden waters (timing will vary based on the season). As the harbor and the waterfront start to shrink behind us, and the Santa Ynez Mountains fill out the whole northern horizon. Sea lions are often sprinkled in the foreground, making their presence known as we pass by.
From there, it's just coastline and the Riviera's red-tiled roofs catching the last of the sun.
The boat is yours to explore different vantage points of the sights around us. You call the shots: we can anchor and float or stroll along the coast. Depending on the day, dolphins might show up and ride the bow and birds, like pelicans and gulls, skim the water in a line with the Channel Islands sitting on the horizon.
Then the sun actually goes down; sometimes dropping straight into the ocean in winter, sometimes settling in behind the mountains in summer. But always, it is uniquely different every night.
By the time we head back into the harbor, the lights along the waterfront are just starting to come on, and everyone’s energy has pleasantly shifted from when we left. You’ll truly understand why its called the American Riviera.
Making It Feel Like Yours
A good sunset cruise leaves room for whatever your group actually wants the evening to be. Time of departure typically depends on the season, somewhere between 3 PM and 7 PM. Lengths are usually 2-hours or 4-hours, however we cater to your custom itinerary and group needs.
Bring a cake for a birthday. Bring champagne for an engagement. Bring a speaker with the exact playlist that reminds everyone of a specific summer. Ask Captain Ron to slow down near the breakwater if the sea lions are being especially dramatic that day, or to time things so the proposal happens right as the light turns pink.
When to Go
Sunset cruises run here year-round, which is one of the underrated perks of Santa Barbara's climate. A few notes if you're picking a season:
Winter (Dec–Feb): Sunsets happen earlier and drop directly over the ocean - dramatic, fast, and often paired with the tail end of gray whale migration.
Spring/Summer (Mar–Aug): Longer evenings, sunset tucks behind the mountains, water tends to be calmer.
Fall (Sep–Nov): Locals' favorite. Warm evenings, clear skies, less marine layer than summer mornings bring.
